College Vocabulary
You'll probably hear a lot of terms and words that don't make sense to you right now, but you'll need to know the lingo.
- Academic Calendar A calendar that shows dates and deadlines throughout the semester.
- Add/Drop Period A specific time at the beginning of the term when students may add a course or drop a course(s) so that it may never appear on the permanent record.
- Associate Degree Award given for programs requiring a minimum of 60 semester hours.
- Auditing Attending a course without receiving credit.
- Campus Cruiser A student entry to the electronic world of Greenville Tech, where an email address will be issued. Access to campus news and student services will be available. Also, the first method to obtain grades. Please note: Grade reports will no longer be mailed.
- Catalog Contains information on admissions, registration, curricula offered, academic requirements and courses of study.
- Certificate Award given for programs requiring a minimum of 8 semester hours.
- Challenge a Course Offered to students who think they have sufficient knowledge of a particular subject through work or military experience. Students receive credit for these courses even though they have not actually taken a course. A test is provided to prove competency.
- Co-requisite Courses that must be taken at the same time.
- Course Number The number that identifies the course within a particular academic department
- Course section number The number that identifies the specific day and time a course is offered. The letter W before the number indicates an online course.
- Credit Hours The number of credits a course carries or is assigned to a course. Example: Biology 101 (3-3-4) carries three lecture hours, three lab hours and four credit hours.
- Curriculum Programs of study offered by the College.
- Days of the week code M=Monday, T=Tuesday, W=Wednesday, R=Thursday, F=Friday, S=Saturday, .
- Diploma Award given for programs requiring a minimum of 41 semester hours.
- FAFSA The Free Application For Federal Student Aid. This is the primary financial aid application that must be completed on an annual basis.
- Finals Exams given at the completion of a semester to test one's knowledge of the course work.
- Full-time Status Enrollment in 12 or more credit hours during each semester, Fall, Spring and Summer.
- Major A student's chosen program of study.
- Online Course A course taken by computer through the use of the internet.
- Prerequisite A course, in a sequence of courses, which must be completed before enrollment in the next course. For example, English 101 must be taken before English 102.
- Purge Deletion of student schedule for non payment of tuition by published deadline. The purge system does not guarantee that classes will be deleted.
- Registration The process of officially enrolling in courses.
- Syllabus An outline statement of the course content.
- Teleclass A class in which the instructor is located on the Barton campus while satellite feeds are sent to Brashier, Greer and NorthWest campuses for students to attend at the branch campus locations..
- Transcript Official record of all academic work attempted by a student.
- Videocourse class which may be watched on DVD or cable television (Channel 14, GEN). This corresponds to the words we use at College Online and our printed and online course schedules at www.gvltec.edu
- WebCT College Online
- Withdrawal This action becomes valid after the add/drop period expires. A withdrawal appears on a transcript, counts as an attempt on the class, and charges tuition fees.
- Withdrawal Administrative A withdrawal action that is processed at the request of the instructor.
